The International Cricket Council's executive committee votes for
the hosts of the tournament after examining bids from the nations which have
expressed an interest in holding the event. After South Africa in 2007, England, West Indies and Sri Lanka hosted the
tournament in 2009, 2010 and 2012 respectively. The next tournament will be
hosted by Bangladesh in 2014. The ICC decided that South
Africa and England should host the first two
tournaments as they were the earliest adopters of the format. India
will host the 2016 tournament.
The inaugural event, the 2007 ICC World Twenty20,
was staged in South Africa from 11–24 September
2007. The tournament was won by India, who
became the first World T20 Champions after defeating Pakistan by 5
runs in the final at Johannesburg. The second event, the 2009 ICC World Twenty20
took place in England from 5–21 June 2009. This
tournament was won by the previous runners-up Pakistan who
defeated Sri Lanka by 8
wickets in the final at Lord's, London. The third tournament, the 2010 ICC World Twenty20
was held from 30 April–16 May 2010 and hosted by the West Indies. The winners were England who
defeated Australia by 7
wickets in the final at Kensington Oval, Barbados. This was the first ever
ICC tournament won by England. The
fourth tournament, the 2012 ICC World Twenty20,
was held from September 18 to October 7, 2012 and was hosted by Sri Lanka. The Winners were West Indies who
defeated Sri Lanka by 36
runs, their first appearance in a world cricket final since 1983 and their
first victory since 1979
The most
interesting Match of the tournament was players between India and Pakistan in super eight. Opting to
bat first, Pakistan
were bundled out for 128 runs with two balls to spare. India 's
comeback man Lakshmipathy Balaji was exceptional in the death overs and
finished with three for 22 in 3.4 overs. Spinners Yuvraj Singh (2/16) and
Ravichandran Ashwin (2/16) bowled tightly on a track that helped the tweakers.
While chasing, India made a
disastrous start as Gautam Gambhir was dismissed in the second delivery with
left-arm spinner Raza Hussain taking a good catch of his own bowling. But from
there on Virender Sehwag (29) and Kohli took the attack to the Pakistani
bowlers as India
recovered from 0/1 to 75 for two.
Virat Kohli struck a brilliant unbeaten half-century as India
stayed in the hunt for a semi-final with a big eight-wicket win over
arch-rivals Pakistan in the Super Eights match of the World Twenty20 at the
Premedasa Stadium here Sunday. Kohli remained unbeaten on 78 off 61 balls as India achieved the target of 129 losing two
wickets and 18 balls to spare and maintained their all-win record against Pakistan in a
World Cup event.
The Final match was played between West Indies
and Srilanka. The West Indies, restricted to 137-6 after electing to bat, hit
back to bowl Sri Lanka
out for 101 and silence a sell-out crowd of 35,000 at the Premadasa stadium
that included President Mahinda Rajapakse. It was the first world title for the
West Indies since the 50-over World Cup triumph under Clive Lloyd in 1979, and
handed Sri Lanka their fourth defeat in a major final since 2007.
