THE IMPORTANCE OF ENGLISH

English language is the most widely spoken language in the world. It is used as either a primary of secondary language in many countries. During the 1500’s fewer than 2 million people spoke English. All of them lived in what is now Great Britain. Through the centuries, as the result of various historical events, English spread throughout the world. Today, about 400 million people speak English as their native language. Most of them live in Australia, Canada, Great Britain, Ireland, New Zealand, South Africa, and the United States. Another 100 million people, chiefly living in Bangladesh, India, Pakistan, and in many African countries, speak English in addition to their own language. An additional 200 million people probably know at least some English.

English has a large vocabulary than any other language. There are more than 600,000 words in the largest dictionaries of the English language. It is for this reason that almost all the languages of the world contain English words. It is far easier to speak than any other European language.

It is indeed the supremacy of English language that we Pakistanis could not yet develop our national language Urdu to replace it. Now we can never even dream of coming out of its clutches. This is because just as television gradually entered each and every house in Pakistan, similarly computer has been entering our houses Ad day will soon come when computer will become a compulsory subject even from KG (kindergarten) and nursery classes. As the language of computer in our country is English, so credit goes to the computer – based information technology in Pakistan that the importance of English has been increasing manifold in Pakistan.
