CARRY THE DAY  / WIN THE DAY 
MEANING : to be successful; to win a competition, argument, etc. (Originally meaning to win a battle.) 
EXAMPLE : Our team didn't play well at first, but we won the day in the end. Preparation won/Carried  the day and James passed his exams.
CARRY THE DAY :
1. to win a war or a fight At the beginning of the American Civil War, many southerners believed their soldiers and statesmen would carry the day.
2. if you carry the day, you persuade people to support your ideas or opinions, or if a particular idea carries the day, it is accepted by a group of people The Republicans carried the day in the dispute over the new jet fighter. Her argument in favour of pay increases eventually carried the day.

HAVE / KEEP AN OPEN MIND Definition = be openmindedEXAMPLE : I tried to keep an open mind about Allan even though I’d heard some bad things about him.

Definition= told the secret so other people found out too early
EXAMPLE : It was going to be a surprise party, until Todd let the cat out of the bag.


SMELL A RAT : 

MEANING  : 
to suspect that something is wrong; to sense that someone has caused something wrong. 

EXAMPLE : 
I don't think this was an accident. I smell a rat. Bob had something to do with this. 
The minute I came in, I smelled a rat. Sure enough, I had been robbed.

SMELL A RAT : 
to start to believe that something is wrong about a situation, especially that someone is being dishonest 
EXAMPLE 
She smelled a rat when she phoned him at the office where he was supposed to be working late and he wasn't there.

SMELL A RAT : to believe something is wrong EXAMPLE When my husband started working late three or four times a week, I smelled a rat.
