English structure Lesson Four

Note the situations:
Ali left his wet towel on the bed.       Ali left his muddy shoes on the carpet.
Ali didn’t make his bed.                     Somebody had spilt coffee on the tablecloth.
Ali didn’t turn off his light.                Nobody had offered to wash up.

  1. I wish Ali wouldn’t leave his wet towel on the bed.
  2. I wish Ali would make his bed.
  3. I wish Ali would turn off his light.
  4. I wish Ali wouldn’t leave his muddy shoes on the carpet.
  5. I wish people wouldn’t spill coffee on the tablecloth.
  6. I wish somebody would offer to wash up.

Regrets about the past:

  1. Ali wanted to see a baseball game, but he didn’t.

He would like to have seen a baseball game.           

  1. Ali didn’t enjoy traveling around by bus.

He would rather not have traveled around by bus.

  1. They went in winter, but summer would have been better.

They would rather have gone in summer than in winter.

  1. They all agreed that it was a bad idea to go by ship.

They would rather not have gone by ship.
