1. PROBLEMS OF KARACHI
Karachi is the biggest city in Pakistan and also one
of the most thickly populated cities in the world. Its population has increased
rapidly and accordingly has given rise to many social problems. People of this
metropolis are becoming more and more concerned about solving these serious
problems, some of which are discussed below.
The ever-increasing rush of heavy traffic on the
roads is resulting in heavy loss of human life. One day or the other, people
suffer from accidents due to reckless driving. Some lose their vehicles and
some go to the police. This is due to lack of civic sense in the citizens and
violation of traffic rules. Traffic jams, road quarrels, untidiness and damage
of public property are also a result of this problem. The government has not
done any planning to control this situation in the past two decades.
In the same manner, the government has never
emphasized upon population distribution. As a result, slum areas are rapidly
being built, where poor labour lives. The disordered development of small
houses is spoiling the outlook of the city, as well as creating problems of
illegal electric connections, water supply and pollution. The authorities have
failed to reclaim the locations from these people.
The academic career of children in Karachi is
unpredictable due to lack of good schools and institutions. The need of
recreational institutions, parks and play grounds is also felt at times and
most of all joblessness creates problems for poor people.
Another problem faced by the citizens of the city is
the frequent power breakdowns. Every other day, K.E.S.C cuts down the electric
supply without notice. This becomes a great hurdle for industries and
professional that use electric machinery for their work. Disturbance and
shortage of water supply is also a cause of discomfort among the citizens.
Sometimes, the dirty and unfiltered water becomes a major factor in food
poisoning, which usually takes place on festive occasions, when demand of water
in the city increases. Any measure to improve the supply of filtered water has
also not been adopted by the government. Problems due to improper drainage
system are also becoming a matter of concern among the people. The alarming in
crease in the disorderliness of drainage lines is posing serious threats for
people, especially in poor areas. Filth and dirt runs down a channel by the
footpath and children play over it. We have malaria, cholera and dysentery
still destroying our children because such things exist.
The attitude of beggars in Karachi is the most
irritating problem. They are worthless idlers robbing good-natural people. It
has become their regular practice to crowd public spots and cheat people. The
adverse effects of begging problem are noticeable in sum areas.
There are too many dirty and ownerless dogs roaming
about in the streets of Karachi. They spread many diseases and sometime become
a danger by injuring people.
Lack of environmental care among people and drivers
of public service vehicles is giving rise to pollution problems. Dust fills the
air in most of the roads all the time. Improper turned cars fill the atmosphere
with deadly smoke at hours of rush, which causes disease among the policemen
and common public. The blowing of pressure horns is always there, deafening the
ears.
Karachi is also often subjected to terrorist
activities. Bomb blasts and firings at public spots are resulting in great loss
of human life. The terrorists deserve no less than capital punishment. It is
the duty of the police to intensify their investigation to stop such
activities.
For the well to do class, life in Karachi may be
fascinating, but for other citizens it is a center of drawbacks. It is only
through the concentrated efforts of each and every person, including the
members of law-enforcing and administrative agencies, can we overcome these
serious problems of the metropolis.
2. Role of Media
"When
complaints are freely heard, deeply considered, and speedily reformed, then is
the utmost bound of civil liberty attained, that wise men look
for."—Milton
The
term media is derived from Medium, which means carrier or mode. Media denotes
an item specifically designed to reach a large audience or viewers. The term
was first used with the advent of newspapers and magazines. However, with the
passage of time, the term broadened by the inventions of radio, TV, cinemas and
Internet.
In
the world of today, media has become almost as necessary as food and clothing.
It is true that media is playing an outstanding role in strengthening the
society. Its duty is to inform, educate and entertain the people. It helps us
to know current situation around the world. The media has a strong social and
cultural impact upon society. Because of its inherent ability to reach large
number of public, it is widely used to convey message to build public opinion
and awareness.
Purposes:
Mass
media can be used for various purposes:
Entertainment:
The
original idea behind the creation of various ‘media means’ was to entertain
masses. Radio, TV, cinemas and magazines spend most of their resources
targeting on entertaining items and programs. Because of the growing population
and developing lifestyle, the demand for more entertainment is increasing.
Every year billion of dollars is traded in entertainment industry.
News & Current
Affairs:
One
of major duties of media today is to inform the people about the latest
happening around them and the world. They cover all aspects of our interest
like weather, politics, war, health, finance, science, fashion, music, etc. The
need for more and more news has evolved into creation of dedicated TV & radio
channels and magazines. People can listen, watch and read latest news whenever
and wherever they want.
Political Awareness:
Media
is the overseer of the political system. If it plays its role honestly, it will
be a great force in building the nation. It plays a great role in bringing
common man close to their leaders. The media focuses in bringing details of all
major political situations, decisions and scenarios. Hence people can better
understand their rights and make better decisions.
Education:
Because
of the power of media is so extensive and huge, it can be used to educate
people with very little cost. Imagine a classroom in every city with thousands
of students being taught by just one teacher. But unfortunately, because of
money-making approach of media and lack of interest by government, very less
work is done in spreading the education.
Public Announcements:
Various
authorities and agencies utilize the power of media to spread informative
messages to public. This may include warning against a storm or epidemic, delay
in arrival or departure of flights and trains, etc. In some cases, it is
legally binding to publish notices in newspaper like tenders, change of
property ownership, etc.
Advertisement:
Almost
all business concerns use the power of media to sell their products. They
advertise in media for the enhancement of business purposes. Huge amounts of
money are invested in media for marketing of a product. The more attractive the
advertisement, the more people will follow it.
Disadvantages:
Even
though there are lot of plus points for use of media but there are also many
disadvantages associated with it. Media has the bad effect of inducing baseless
ideas through advertisements. People are forced to buy harmful or substandard
products. Sometimes, the Media develops unnecessary sensation and distortion of
truth to attract attention. Because of its power to build public opinion, the
influence of media can make or break the government.
Conclusion:
The
media has the power of educating people, the good and the bad. Since it affect
the eyes, the ears and the mind simultaneously nothing can overcome the
influence of the media. The media in the advanced society should perform a
noble mission of enlightening people and discourage sectarian, communal and
divisive trends.
3. ENVIRONMENTAL POLLUTION
Quotation : “ Environmental pollution is an
incurable disease. It can only be prevented. “
Environmental
pollution is the biggest menace to the human race on this planet today. It
means adding impurity to environment. The environment consists of earth, water,
air, plants and animals. If we pollute them, then the existence of man and
nature will be hampered.
It
is true that trees are being cut down rapidly. Our earth is becoming warmer. If
pollution continues, the day is not far when our earth will be a boiling pan
and become a desert. Or it will be covered with sea water causing destruction of
mankind.
Pure
air is always needed for inhaling. If we take pure air, our health improves. On
the other hand impure air causes diseases and impairs our health and causes our
death. Smoke pollutes the air. It is the root of air pollution. The smoke which
is discharged from industries, automobiles and kitchens is the mixture of
carbon monoxide, carbon dioxide, methane etc. These are all poisonous gases.
These cause lung-cancer, tuberculosis etc. which take a heavy toll of life.
The
garbage emitting foul smell, the decaying plants and animals also cause air
pollution. Hence the doctors advise the patients having lungs trouble to settle
in some rural places because the air of villages is pure and free from
population.
Then
comes sound pollution. The harsh sounds of buses, its, mopeds etc. affect our
power of hearing and causes fart trouble. The water of rivers and seas is being
constantly polluted all over the world by various dangerous chemical and
biological wastes. Mills and factories discharge very harmful waste waters into
many rivers and sea.
Reckless
application of chemical fertilizers, insecticides and pesticides pollutes the
soil. Vegetables and fruits are quite injurious today, because they contain the
poison of insecticides and pesticides.
If
the air we breathe, the water we drink and the soil which produces our crops,
vegetables and fruits, all become more and more impure, then our chances of
good health and longevity will be very less and less. Environment pollution is
a serious menace to our existence. Realising the danger, we must plant trees in
large number to absorb impure air. Impure water from industries can be sent
back for purification and then it can be used for irrigation purpose. Our
government is well aware of the fact and is taking steps to save environment
from pollution.
Quotation :
“ There’s so much Environmental pollution now that if it weren’t for our
lungs there’d be no place to put it all. ”
