English language Structure Lesson Two

today i am going to share with you English language Structure Lesson Two

NEED

  • I NEED TO DO SOMETHING. (= it is necessary for me to do it.)
  • I NEED TO TAKE MORE TRAINING IN ENGLISH LANGUAGE.
  • SHE NEEDS TO WORK HARDER IF SHE REALLY WANTS TO MAKE PROGRESS.
  • I DON’T NEED TO COME TO THE MEETING. DO I?

SOMETHIN NEEDS DOING

  • THE BATTERIES IN THE RADIO NEED CHANGING.
  • DO YOU THINK MY COAT NEEDS DRY CLEANING?
  • IT’S A DIFFICULT PROBLEM.  IT NEEDS THINKING ABOUT VERY CAREFULLY.
  • THIS ROOM NEEDS TIDYING.
  • THIS WINDOW NEEDS DUSTING.
  • YOUR COAT DOESN’T NEED IRONING.

NEED, NEEDN’T

  • YOU NEEDN’T SPEAK SO LOUDLY.
  • SHE NEEDN’T COME WITH US IF SHE DOESN’T WANT TO.
  • SHE IS THIRSTY. SHE NEEDS A DRINK.
  • ALI AND ASLAM ARE HERE. THEY SAY THEY NEED TO SEE YOU URGENTLY.
  • YOU NEEDN’T HAVE A SPECIAL PASS TO GET IN.

NEEDN’T / DON’T HAVE TO

  • YOU DON’T NEED TO HAVE A SPECIAL PASS TO GET IN.
  • IT WOULD BE GOOD TO SEE YOU, BUT YOU NEEDN’T / DON’T HAVE TO COME IF YOU’RE BUSY.
  • YOU DON’T HAVE TO / NEEDN’T WHISPER. NOBODY CAN HEAR US.

ALSO NOTE

  • NEED YOU GO HOME SO SOON?
  • NEED I SAY MORE?
  • NEED YOU ASK?
  • HE NEED NOT COME.

  • IN NEED OF = requiring (I AM IN NEED OF A CAR.)
  • HAVE NEED OF =require, want  ( DESPERATLY I HAVE NEED OF A CAR.)
  • HAVE NEED TO =require to ( HE HAS NEED TO BE WARNED.)

Also study how we use NEED with SCARCELY, HARDLY and ONLY, particularly in formal contexts;

  • WE NEED HARDLY POINT OUT THAT THERE IS A WATER SHORTAGE AT THE MOMENT.
  • I NEED SCARCLEY ADD THAT YOU WILL BE MISSED.
  • THE CHANGES NEED ONLY BE SMALL TO MAKE THE PROPOSALS ACCEPTABLE.

  • ---HARDLY NEED TO POINT---, SCARELY NEED TO ADD---, AND ---ONLY NEED TO BE… ARE ALSO POSSIBLE, AND LESS FORMAL.

  • No more of that / the hour of prayer / a person of tact / a girl of ten / is of great interest / you of all people / last mentioned /
  • Large-minded = liberal; not narrow-minded
  • At last = in the end; after much delay
  • Last agony = the pangs of death
  • The last word = a final or definitive statement ( always has the last word; is the last word on this subject )
  • Laugh off = get rid of (embarrassment of humiliation )with a jest
  • Laugh in a person’s face = show open scorn for a person
  • Law-abiding = obedient to the laws
  • Go to law = take legal action
  • At law = according to the laws
  • Law-abidingness = obedience to the laws
  • Take the law into one’s own hands = redress a grievance by one’s own means. Esp. by force.
